In the annals of war history, there are heroes who do not wear uniforms or carry weapons, but whose courage and determination are equally memorable. One of these feathered heroes is Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon whose name in French means “dear friend.” Cher Ami’s story is a tale of bravery that dates back to the battlefields of World War I.
The context of the war
On battlefields, victory is not only achieved with conventional weapons such as cannons, tanks and aircraft, but also through effective, reliable and secure communication. However, during World War I, this communication faced numerous challenges.
Cable connections were vulnerable to enemy attacks, while human couriers risked their lives dodging enemy artillery. Additionally, radio technology was not always a viable option on the battlefield. In this scenario, armies turned to an old but reliable tactic: pigeon racing, or the use of trained carrier pigeons.
In September 1918, American forces were in a critical situation on the Western Front. Specifically in the Argonne forest, located in France. A battalion of the 77th Infantry Regiment was trapped behind enemy lines, without supplies or communication with allied forces. In this desperate situation, they turned to Cher Ami, a trained carrier pigeon assigned to the United States Army Carrier Pigeon Corps. Cher Ami was in charge of carrying an urgent message requesting help for the trapped American soldiers.
An act of bravery
With the message tied to her paw, they launched Cher Ami into the air. However, in her dangerous flight over enemy lines, she was the target of enemy gunfire. Even though she was seriously injured, the dove continued to fly with determination, to deliver her crucial message.
Thanks to Cher Ami’s message, the Allied forces launched a successful counterattack that rescued American soldiers trapped in the Argonne Forest. The estimate is that around 200 lives were saved thanks to the bravery of this carrier pigeon.

Although she managed to accomplish her mission, Cher Ami suffered serious injuries in the process. She lost a leg and suffered injuries to her chest, but her indomitable spirit allowed her to survive. However, shortly after the war, Cher Ami died due to injuries sustained in her heroic act.
Cher Ami left a lasting legacy as a symbol of bravery and service during World War I. He received the French Legion of Honor in recognition of his heroism, and his story continues to inspire later generations. She is exhibited in the Smithsonian museum, in the United States.
