It is known to be from pre-Roman times. Experts date it to approximately 2,700 years ago. What is it about? Of a new acropolis in Italy. How was it discovered?
The discovery was made by specialists during a preventive archaeological excavation. This comes in light of the construction of a planned power plant, about 50 km northeast of Naples, Italy.
Contemporary of Rome
During the work, a large area of burials was unearthed. In doing so, they determined in what period it should have operated. This happened between the end of the Iron Age and the third half of the 8th century BC. C. and the second half of the 7th century BC. c.
It is worth noting that the great cemetery was created and used at the same time that Rome was founded. It is known that this event occurred around 753 BC. C. However, the Iron Age community that built this cemetery had no direct connection with Rome. Distance would be a problem for this. And the city is 200 kilometers away, he writes Arkeonews.
This large Iron Age cemetery extends over an area of 13,000 square meters. In total, archaeologists have unearthed 88 tombs. Among these, there are both cineraries and inhumations, full of funerary goods. These are people prior to the Sanmites who lived in the interior of the region known today as Campania.
Gender differences
The grave goods show clear gender differences. The men’s graves contained weapons. On the other hand, those that belonged to women were richly decorated with bronze ornaments. Among these, there were fibulas, bracelets, pendants, amber elements and pieces of worked bone. Both men and women were buried with ceramic objects of various shapes and sizes. The objects were usually placed near the feet of the deceased.
The investigation of a new necropolis in Italy highlights the importance of archaeological prevention. Especially before important excavation work like the ones that led to this discovery.
