Microsoft has stopped offering its VPN service definitively. Unknown to many users, Microsoft VPN was integrated into the Microsoft Defender service, a security suite that protects computers with Windows operating system of all kinds of threats: virus, malware, cyber attacks … It is also available for Mac, Android and iOS.
Microsoft Defender is a service that is integrated into the tools Microsoft makes available to users who subscribe to Microsoft 365. This is the name that currently receives the most popular office tools suite in the world. Known for many years as Microsoft Office, it was called Office 365 as a previous step to its current denomination, Microsoft 365. It is actually the same office suite, but it has only evolved the name.
Most of Microsoft 365 subscribers know that thanks to the payment they make monthly or annually, they can use mythical programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. They also have 1 TB of Cloud storage of One Drive and also integrated in recent months Copilot, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Microsoft.
Precisely this fact has also meant a drastic modification of its price, both in the monthly and annual subscription mode. Since January, the price of Microsoft 365 became much more expensive. For example, the subscription of 69 euros per year, for a user, now costs 99 euros, 30 euros more a year.
But despite the climb, Microsoft has decided to withdraw one of the products it offered to Microsoft 365. Since February 28, 2025, the VPN included in Microsoft Defend is available (which included, in turn, in Microsoft 365).
Until now, the Microsoft VPN provided 50 GB of monthly data limit to navigate online anonymously. However, this product ceases to be included among the functions of Microsoft 365.
As Microsoft has recognized on its official technical support website, “they will eliminate the privacy protection feature and will invest in new areas that will better adapt to the needs of customers after evaluating the use and effectiveness of the VPN included in the service.”
In principle, users will not have to do anything, but if the VPN was installed in their equipment they could uninstall it, because from the month of March it will be a program that will no longer be useful. Those who will use it will have to use an alternative among the best VPNs in the market. Fortunately, there are countless services that can fulfill the same function as Microsoft’s VPN, although most have a cost, although there are also free VPN.
