Artificial Intelligence seems to have no limits. So much so that it can even make the dead speak, in what is known as “digital necromancy.” In other words, it creates an interaction between a person and their deceased loved one, based on digital traces they left during their passage through this world.
Use of digital necromancy on screens
All this is possible thanks to generative AI and its powerful tools such as ChatGPT and image processors such as Dall E 2. Thanks to technology we have already seen figures such as Michael Jackson or Bruce Lee “resurrected”, where digital necromancy divided the opinions between those who consider it an advance and those who do not agree that using a deceased person to generate money. However, in these cases they applied “deep fake”, an inferior technology different from Artificial Intelligence.
They also implemented “digital necromancy” in Hollywood films. Carrie Fisher appeared in a Star Wars movie after she died. And the same thing happened with Peter Cushing in Rogue One of the same saga. However, in the cinematographic world, with all its high performance resources, that is, with an abundance of resources, this type of “resurrections” is more normal.
Being able to interact with deceased loved ones
With the advancement of generative Artificial Intelligence and its multiple tools, this is within the reach of anyone. One user even used an OpenAI tool to “talk” to his deceased girlfriend.
This is how some companies developed services that are based on generative AI to “bring back to life” loved ones who have already died.
There are those who think that ethics is at stake with this. How far is it possible to advance and where is the limit between what is good and what is bad.
Some people will be uncomfortable with being able to chat with their dead relatives as if they were connected from the afterlife, while others will wonder why not? In any case, they are digital simulations.
Many people save photographs, videos, recordings, WhatsApp chats, images from social networks, as memories of their family members. It comforts them to review those treasures that remind them of their loved ones.
All those memories form an eternal bond with those who are no longer here. What generative artificial intelligence offers is not something new, but a different option to talk to deceased loved ones.
If generative AI uses existing voice recordings, social media, or emails from the deceased person, all it does is create a simulated interaction between the user and their loved one.
Some consider it to be a fraud. Although, when they discovered photography, many said that photos captured the soul of the person on paper. The passage of time erased those sayings and progress brought that every moment is recorded with a mobile phone camera.
