Gboard is one of the most complete keyboards for Android. It has many tricks to optimize typing and is constantly receiving new features to be more useful and competent. Regarding this last point, Google is working to improve the keyboard layout on tablets in order to make typing more comfortable.
Extremely large and poorly arranged keys will be completely eliminated in the new keyboard for tablets.
Typing on a tablet has always been a complicated task due to the poorly optimized interface of the keyboard. It is not able to take advantage of the screen size. Google has noticed the problem and has set to work to fix it, and even took its first steps in the Android 12L update. A version that is aimed at devices with large screens.
Logically, Android 12L has only been the beginning, since Google is optimizing a new update that has not yet been released, we are talking about Gboard v12.3 beta. The goal of this system is to make the keyboard and keys taller in the horizontal layout to make typing easier. In addition, the keys will be in the form of narrower and higher rectangles, this in order to make writing a comfortable task on the tablet.
With the new update, the keyboard for the tablet will be very similar in size and layout to a 60% physical keyboard, which is excellent news, as this translates into comfort and speed when typing. There will also be dedicated keys for “Tab”, “Caps Lock” and “Shift”, all with the same width as a real keyboard.
For their part, the comma and period keys were moved next to the space bar. Also, there will be dedicated keys for the left and right arrows. This is a useful addition when editing text.
Finally, the update is currently only available to beta testers. Google will officially release it in a few days.
