It seems that every day we are witnessing new developments in terms of. artificial intelligences capable of generating content. Following examples such as DALL-E, capable of creating images from descriptions made from natural text, Google researchers have succeeded in using this type of descriptions to generate musical pieces several minutes long.
MusicLM can create music from natural text instructions that include prompts such as “appropriate for a prison escape movie.”
The tool with which this has been achieved is called. MusicLM and is able to follow the text descriptions in terms of style, instruments, rhythm… generating musical pieces that comply to the letter with those instructions.
The results obtained could very well pass for compositions coming from human creators, but Google researchers have also generated clips focused on specific instruments, from maracas to the cello, or even musical pieces that could serve as soundtracks in movies or television series.including in the description indications that it is music “appropriate for a prison escape”.
MusicLM is even capable of generating audio clips that take into account the quality of the performer, so that the same piece does not offer the same result in terms of performance if it is asked to be played by a beginner or an advanced performer of that instrument. In addition to musical instruments, voices are also generated, although in this case the quality is more debatable.
For the time being Google has no plans to offer MusicLM to the public. citing the potential risks of what they call “potential misappropriation of creative content.”in addition to citing other misuses such as cultural appropriation. In return, they have announced that they will make public a collection of more than 5,000 examples of music creation from text instructions, to serve as a reference for other musicians and technicians who are developing similar artificial intelligence systems.
