Half of the ice in the Arctic was lost

Many people deny global warming. Some of them are still very influential political leaders. We are in time to deny everything, even what is obvious. But the facts show an undeniable reality. For example, the fact is that half of the ice in the Arctic has been lost for 40 years. And this news in itself should alarm us.

Less and less ice

This is explained by the head of the Russian Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Rosgidromet), Igor Shumakov. “The extent of the ice sheet in the Arctic in 2007 was minimum. It was 4.19 million square kilometers. In 2012 it was 3.35 million and in 2019 4.1 million. Compare with the 7.6 million square kilometers in 1980. Or the 7.28 million in 1983, ”explains Shumakov.

The head of the Rosgidromet indicates that the ice sheet is getting thinner. And that the ice sheet (the ice sheet) in the seas of northern Russia has almost completely disappeared.

“In winter, the North Sea route is still covered with dense seasonal ice. But the dates of their formation and disappearance, especially in the Chukotka Sea, changed for October, November and May, “he says.

The decrease in ice could cause a number of environmental problems.

Without exploration bases

Rosgidromet’s research director, Román Vilfand, perceives other problems. The lack of perennial ice has prevented traditional expeditions to the North Pole for years. Under the current conditions, it is impossible to find an iceberg with minimal risk of destruction during the drift that serves as the base for expeditionaries.

According to scientists, ice cover in the Arctic is influenced by climate change, which leads to a temperature rise in this region that is four times faster than the global average. Yes, it is a fact: half of the ice in the Arctic has been lost, although many still prefer to look away.
