What is it really What is the benefit of knowing this information? Geologists at MIT measure the internal temperature of the earth. How do you do that?

Hot lava
Thousands of samples of excavated material are tracked. Analysis shows that it was relatively constant. Around 1,350 degrees Celsius. Some places can reach 1,600 degrees Celsius, like the hottest lava.
The results appear in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth. They provide a temperature map of the Earth’s interior around the mid-ocean ridges. With this map, scientists can better understand certain fusion processes. For example, those that create underwater volcanoes. And how these processes can accelerate plate tectonics.

“Plate tectonics and convection shape the earth.” That’s what lead author Stephanie Brown Kerin said in a statement. He works in the Department of Earth Sciences at MIT. “It is important to know the temperature in this chain. We will understand the planet as a heat engine. And how the earth could differ from other planets and be able to support life.
Use algorithms
An algorithm was developed. Trace the chemical history of a rock back in time. And it determines the temperature at which the rock melted beneath the surface. It is based on years of laboratory experiments. It was applied to rocks collected along the Earth’s ocean ridges. This system of underwater volcanoes covers a length of more than 70,000 kilometers. The mid-ocean ridges are regions where tectonic plates are separated by the eruption of material from the Earth’s mantle.
“One could effectively model the temperature of the entire interior of the earth. The basis would be the temperature at these ridges. We will continue to determine the internal temperature of the earth, ”says Kerin.
