It has been a week since Russia launched its offensive against Ukraine. In these days, diplomatic and economic sanctions against Moscow have followed one after another, joined by technology companies and digital platforms such as Facebook, Google or YouTube. Now, Netflix and Spotify have stepped forward to put pressure on the Kremlin and punish it for its aggression against Ukraine.

Netflix announces that it is halting its production in Russia and Spotify will close its offices in the country

Netflix has announced that indefinitely suspends all projects it had planned in the country. The streaming company has stopped, for example, the recording of the Russian series “Zato” and “Anna K”, a production based on the eponymous novel by Leon Tolstoy.

Likewise, Netflix has made public that will not include TV channels linked to the Russian state on its platformsuch as Russia Today or the official channel of the Orthodox Church. This is despite the fact that an audiovisual law obliges all platforms with more than 100,000 users to offer official television channels.

Spotify also takes action against Russia

Spotify, for its part, has indefinitely closed its offices in Moscow. The music streaming platform had opened its branch in the city just a month ago. It did so after a law came into force that obliges all tech companies with more than 500,000 users to have an office in the country.

However, Russian Spotify users will still have access to the platform. From the company they explain that they consider this a strategic decision to “ensure the global flow of information.” Spotify also will delete Russia Today and Sputnik News channels from its platform for their propagandistic function in the service of Putin.

Twitter and Meta’s social networks are also suppressing or censoring these channels in order to prevent disinformation.
