Saturn’s rings will disappear

It’s not something completely unusual. In fact, it happens every 15 years, according to astronomers. Is it true that Saturn’s rings will disappear? Yes, but only temporarily.

The complete disappearance of Saturn’s rings for Earth observers will occur twice. The first time will be in the spring of 2025. And the second, during the fall of the same year. This was reported to the scientific director of the Ka-Dar observatory and the Astroverti astronomical farm, Stas Korotki.

Biweekly frequency

«This happens once every 15 years. That is, twice during Saturn’s orbital period [un año en Saturno dura 30 años terrestres]. Saturn’s rings will disappear before us. The fact is that we [los observadores en la Tierra] We are on the same plane as the rings of this planet. And then we see them edge-on, and the rings are very thin. Only about 30 meters thick,” said Stas Korotki.

He added that the distance from Earth to Saturn is more than one billion kilometers. So, in fact, for us they will disappear even if they are observed with the largest telescope. The complete disappearance of the rings will occur in the spring and autumn of 2025. At other times next year they will be visible as a very thin strip. This is a rare event, once every 15 years our famous ringed planet will appear without its rings.

With telescope

The expert pointed out that the disappearances will occur in pairs, eight months apart. It is estimated to be March 23 and November 26. In this case, the spring disappearance of the rings will be inaccessible to observers from Earth.

The autumn disappearance of the rings will already have good visibility conditions. It will be possible to observe the disappearance of the planet’s rings with a telescope with good magnification.
