Despite the increase in cybersecurity awareness globally and in most companies, the number of security breaches and violations continues to grow. The tricks of cybercriminals are increasingly sophisticated when it comes to launching their attacks with the aim of stealing sensitive information. Furthermore, on many other occasions, it is mistakes or security failures in companies that reveal sensitive information.
Analyzing what the situation is is essential to be able to make quick decisions that minimize attacks and data security breaches, such as Surfshark Alert, which we will analyze throughout this article. The Surfshark company not only monitors the security of your company but also generates interesting reports worldwide to be aware of trends and the current situation.
In this sense, it has also presented the new update of its Report on Global Security Breaches, with data corresponding to the second quarter of 2023. We analyze its main conclusions.
Worrying situation at a global level
The report prepared by Surfshark analyzes which countries suffered the most security breaches in the second quarter of the year and compares the information with data from the previous three months. It also highlights the main countries by number and density of violations and details which regions are most vulnerable.
The global trend is worrying, since in the quarter analyzed the number of leaks has almost tripled compared to the data from the previous quarter. According to the study, more than 110 million accounts were leaked in the second quarter of 2023, which is 2.6 times more than in the first quarter of the year, when 43.2 million leaks were recorded.
Another piece of information that demonstrates the situation we find ourselves in is that the number of accounts breached per minute in the world is 855 in the second quarter of the year, while 334 were recorded in the previous quarter.
Spain, at the forefront of security breaches and data breaches
But if the outlook is bleak globally, it is even more so in our country. According to Surfshark data, Spain is the third country in the world in which the most breaches and security vulnerabilities are recorded.
Spain had a total of 3.7 million filtered accounts in the second quarter of 2023. This represents a significant increase compared to the 3.1 million in the first quarter. The increase has caused Spain to go from fifth place worldwide in the ranking of security breaches to third place in just three months.
All the countries that have the dubious honor of being part of the top 5 in the ranking of nations with the most security breaches have seen their records grow in the last three months. So much so, that between the five, they represent 68% of the total vulnerabilities registered worldwide.
The list is headed by the United States, where 49.8 million accounts were compromised (45% of the global total). The figure is very high, especially when compared to the 5.4 million accounts compromised in the previous quarter. That is, the increase in security violations is 830% in just three months.
After the United States, Russia is in second place, with 15.3 million compromised accounts (it had had 6.8 million in the first quarter). After Spain -third place- the top 5 is closed by France with 3.4 million accounts and Turkey with 2.8 million accounts.
