The Animal Protection law modifies the Spanish Civil Code

Until now, the Spanish civil code labeled animals as movable property. This custom was left behind a long time ago by countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium or France among several others. The law establishes that a relationship of a person with an animal, be it domestic or wild, must consider its sensibility. The law also prohibits abandonment, cruelty, mistreatment and causing death.

They will control organisms related to animal breeding. Such as zoos, breeders or protective entities. In addition, breeding will be limited to registered breeders to avoid indiscriminate reproduction and sale of animals.

Pet owners will also have obligations

Pets become a member of the family according to the new law. However, there is disagreement on some points. Like that dogs and cats will have their own DNI. Another disagreement is that the owner has to prove the completion of a special course.

The content of this course is still unknown. But the objective is to guarantee that the person who owns a pet knows how to take care of his dog and that he is clear about the things that benefit him and the things that can harm him.

These are some of the rules included in the new law
  • Euthanasia will only be allowed in cases justified by a veterinarian.
  • Animals may not be included in public performances that may cause them suffering or undignified treatment.

  • Impossible to confine a dog in confined places such as balconies or rooftops on a permanent basis.
  • Leaving the pet alone for more than three consecutive days.
  • The animals given up for adoption, will have to have their documentation up to date and be sterilized.
  • Stores will not be allowed to sell pets.

They hope that this law will reduce the high number of animal abandonment, which places Spain in the first place among European countries. In addition, they also hope to reduce the suffering or death of animals for different reasons.
