The new biotechnological tattoos

It is something new in the skin art industry. A group of Turkish researchers appeared who invented tattoos that have the ability to wirelessly communicate with other devices. That is, they do not need cables or use devices that require a battery source. Innovative biotechnological tattoos are part of a surprising future.

These biosensor tattoos were manufactured at Istanbul Technical University. They were made by Kristen Belcastro and Onur Ergen, specialists on the subject. The process consists of two inks: one made of black graphene and another white made of zinc oxide.

electrical signals

Inside they have nanowires. In the first instance, the white ink is placed and then the black. Both have airgel to unify the strokes. Although they are placed simultaneously, it is done through different needles that are on the same device.

What can these tattoos be used for? In the vast majority of cases, to monitor health. These can be connected (via frequencies) with an intelligent system. For example, that of a cell phone. This way they can transmit data such as blood pressure, glucose and more.

Although they are not the first to create this type of tattoos, they bring an innovative element: autonomy. The idea is that these biosensors can generate their own electrical signals thanks to a mechanism of piezoelectric activity. That is, the change of energy through pressure. This is generated by the movements that the skin and, therefore, the tattoo may have.

Preventing diseases

The former CEO of Microsoft also wanted to venture into the world of innovative biotechnological tattoos. In one of his many projects, he presented the idea of Chaotic Moon, an American company dedicated to biotechnology. Through the development of tattoos with functionalities such as collecting data, the aim is to prevent diseases and manage diagnoses.

In fact, one of Bill Gates’ future goals is that, through these tattoos, alert messages can be sent to a smartphone. However, these would be temporary and would have sensors and trackers, also made with a special ink that can conduct electricity.
