The secret to having longevity

The theme attracts more and more attention throughout the world. Biotechnologies, considered the medicine of the future, can play a crucial role in this matter. What is the secret to having longevity? Professor Dimitri Kudlai explains it. The aging of the population is a worldwide trend. In 2022 about 10% of the world’s population was over 65 and by 2050 this figure will increase to 16%. This demographic change raises serious social, economic and medical challenges.

“Technologies, including biomedics, allow attention to the elderly,” says the professor of the Academy of Sciences of Russia (RAN), Kudlai. The increase in the average age of the population affects the labor market, consumption patterns and the economy in general. The labor productivity of people over 65 decreases. Their savings are minor compared to the population of working age.

Screening

Demographic challenges are closely linked to three key stages. Prenatal and neonatal screening, medical check -ups and diagnosis and prevention and treatment of age -related diseases. There are specific technologies that already apply at all stages. There are new diagnostic platforms to identify hereditary pathologies from the early stages of life.

In Russia, an advanced neonatal screening is made that allows to detect genetic disorders early. It facilitates preventive interventions and reduces load on the health system. Likewise, multiplex diagnostic systems are used. They allow analyzing DNA fragments that help identify immunological defects in T and B lymphocytes. These tools allow even minor defects and customize treatments.

In addition, there are already preventive and therapeutic technologies to combat cardiovascular diseases. They demonstrate to be effective in reducing mortality and improving the quality of life, says the teacher.

Medical cybernetics

For the development of biotechnologies, continuous, multidisciplinary universities are required. In addition to clinical departments, attention should be paid to biological and chemical formation. “It is a fascinating symbiosis in which new solutions arise that transcend the limits of a single discipline,” he says.

The secret to having longevity is in the hands of the researchers. Multidisciplinary specialists will be the engine of future innovations. A key element of training should be medical cybernetics. They are remote monitoring systems and digital medical records that will simplify the work of doctors. These are important trends that require attention.
