The metal detectors used in the Master, the northwest part of the island of Selandia in eastern Denmark, found something. They found in 2024 an exceptionally rare fragment of a helmet. This is from the period immediately before the Viking era. Now, this unique piece will be exposed to the public for the first time at the Museum of Para. The strange Viking object will be the subject of attention by its visitors.
The piece is plated in gold. In addition, she was adorned with precious red stones. It belonged to one of the most magnificent helmets in Scandinavia, say the archaeologists of Romu. It is a cultural organization of Denmark that manages several museums and historical sites in the regions of Roskilde, Parader and Frederiksund.

Gold plated
The piece will soon be available for your exhibition. It shows probable connections between the current United Kingdom and Sweden. It consists of two parts discovered in the same field, embedded as pieces of a puzzle.
Gold plated, it is made of bronze with a red stone known as garnet. The two -part piece constitutes most of the helmet superciliar arch, as indicated by its characteristic curved shape.
«Gold, ornamentation and garnet highlight the greatness of the helmet. The ornamentation – a creature with prominent teeth and large eyes – reflects the style we recognize of the subsequent age of Germanic iron. The fragment dates between 650 and 750 AD »declared the archaeological director of Romu, Julie Nielsen.

Extraordinary rarity
Nielsen stressed that the artifact was not created for battle. During the late Germanic iron age, Master was not a place of conflict. «We observe fragments of similar helmets in neighboring countries of the East and West (United Kingdom and Sweden). This indicates that Master was located in the heart of an important commercial axis », a center of political and religious elites, he added.
The strange Viking object is a true rarity. «Unlike other helmets that have three separate accessories, the arch of the forehead of this helmet is made of one piece. We had not found before a similar version of this unique helmet ». He was stressed by the principal researcher at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, John Ljungkvist.
