The ship has come under the radar of Polish divers. What did they find at the bottom of the Baltic Sea? A sailing ship that sank about 150 years ago, the Polish state news agency PAP reported. Located at a depth of 58 meters, the ship was carrying bottles of champagne and mineral water. The sunken sailing ship that appeared in Poland tells its story.
“We saw more than 100 champagne bottles and baskets of mineral water in clay bottles,” said team leader Tomasz Stachura. It is true that they also found wine and porcelain on board the sailing ship. But the diver singled out the mineral water as a more interesting find, which “gave them more clues” for the next investigation.
German mineral water
Later, they determined that the mineral water was from the German brand Selters. It is one of the oldest waters extracted in Europe and very popular in the 20th century. “Thanks to the shape of the seal and the help of historians, we know that the water was bottled between 1850 and 1876. This could point to a probable period of the sinking of the ship,” Stachura added.
He gave his opinion on one of the possible causes of the shipwreck. It appeared about 20 nautical miles south of the Swedish island of Öland. It is believed that it could have been due to the excessive weight of the cargo being transported, or a storm at sea.
Causes of sinking
The sunken sailing ship found in Poland “is small, just 16 metres long. What is striking is the fact that the ship, compared to the cargo, is quite humble,” he said. Divers assume that the ship’s owner borrowed money to buy cargo in Copenhagen. He then headed for Stockholm, hoping to get rich.
Stachura also shared his second hypothesis about what happened, according to which the sailing ship collided with another ship. This may explain the damage to the bow of the sunken ship. The Polish team of divers is looking for a sponsor to organize an inspection of the wreck. They are doing this under the auspices of Swedish archaeologists, to whom he informed about his discovery.
