This is a job opportunity. And not just anyone. NASA is looking for volunteers to simulate life on Mars. They expect motivated volunteers to take part in one-year assignments. They are carried out in a habitat that simulates space stressors. When does it start? In autumn 2022.
One year mission
It’s called Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA). The mission series includes three simulations of the surface of Mars. The total time is one year, and they are based on NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Research has specific goals. You want to develop methods and technologies to avoid and solve possible problems in future missions. This should be used for manned space flights to the moon and Mars. It NASA reports in a statement.
Each mission consists of four crew members. You are in a 3D printed room module. The room is 570 square feet and is called Mars Dune Alpha. The habitat will simulate the challenges of a mission on Mars. For example, resource restrictions or device failures. Communication delays and other environmental stressors too. The tasks of the crew will also be varied. Simulated space walks, scientific research … virtual reality and robot control and communication exchanges are used. The results will validate systems to develop solutions.
Candidates
NASA is looking for U.S. citizens or permanent residents. You need to be healthy and motivated. You are not allowed to be a smoker and are between 30 and 55 years old. You must be fluent in English to ensure effective communication between the crew and command and control. The crew is selected according to NASA’s standard criteria. It’s what they ask of budding astronauts.
A master’s degree in a MINT area is required. For example engineering, mathematics, biological or physical sciences. And at least two years of professional MINT experience or at least a thousand hours of flight. Or they have completed a medical degree or a pilot program.
NASA has not yet announced the amount of the payment. But it is known that it will be several thousand dollars. Are you looking for a job? Would you like to be one of the volunteers simulating life on Mars? This is your chance.
