Fiber optic Internet coverage is widespread in all parts of the world. However, there are still rural places where this type of technology remains inaccessible. Fortunately, there are some solutions to connect to the network in these areas.
If, for example, you need an alternative to fiber to be able to connect to the Internet in your town, or in the mountains if you are going to spend a few days camping, in this article we are going to show you the best options available to you.
How to connect to the Internet in rural areas
When you have a fiber optic or ADSL service, you connect to the Internet thanks to a router that, in turn, is connected by cable to the fiber network or ADSL network deployed by the telephone operators that provide Internet service. However, although coverage is usually very broad, this facility may not be available in all territories.
In very inhospitable places or places far from a connection node, the ADSL or fiber optic connection may not reach. In those homes where this infrastructure is not available, these other options may be useful. Take note:
Hire satellite Internet
In this case, the Internet connection is made directly through a satellite. That is, it is wireless and no cable is needed. To do this, what is done is to install an antenna on the outside of the building. This will be the one that will connect to a satellite provided by the telephone company you have contracted. The procedure is to connect a modem with such an antenna and, in turn, the devices to that modem via WiFi or a network cable.
One of the best-known satellite Internet connection operators is Eurona. It has coverage in Spain, Europe, Africa and part of the Middle East. Other notable companies are Viasat, which operates in Spain, and Embou, which operates only in Aragon and areas of Navarra. Elon Musk has also launched his own Satellite Internet company, Starlink.
Have a 4G/5G connection at home
Having 4G or 5G at home is a good alternative to have Internet in your second home if it is located in a rural area or also for when you travel often and need an Internet connection wherever you go. Of course, as long as you have good 4G coverage. The speed with this technique is higher than with the rest of the connections, but you may have a gigabyte limit.
Both the mobile Internet option and the 4G at home option are options with which you can connect to the network without requiring any installation, since they work thanks to the antennas that the companies have in their stations throughout the national territory. The 4G at home option works in a very similar way to 4G on your mobile phone, since it also uses a SIM card that is installed in a 4G router. Today, the best mobile coverage is 5G.
Some of the companies that offer this service in Spain are Movistar, Vodafone and Orange.
WiMAX connection
WiMAX is the acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, which in Spanish would be something like Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a data transmission method that uses radio waves with a frequency of 2.5 and 5.8 GHz. It is a good option for rural areas because it works thanks to radio waves that carry information and data wireless through a WiMAX antenna. It is an alternative that can work very well when you need to consume a lot of data since it has no limits.
Eurona, Embou in Aragón and Navarra, Netllar, WiFinity, Wimax Online, Jetnet or Telfy are some of the operators that offer this service. We recommend that you ensure the coverage of each company because not all of them operate in all territories.
Connect with a USB Modem
It is an alternative that allows you to have Internet portable way through a small device -a USB modem- that looks like a pendrive known as an “Internet spike.”
Its operation is similar to 4G at home and all you need is to sign up for a mobile rate and get the modem. The SIM card associated with the contracted rate is inserted inside it and then inserted into the computer through the USB connector.
Movistar, Yoigo, Lowi or Fi.network are some of the companies that offer you the ability to connect to the Internet through a USB modem.
