What is the Windows “black screen” and how to fix it

The Windows black screen is a technical problem – very similar to the pink screen or blue screen of death – that you may experience when the operating system appears to load, but the screen remains black, blocking access to your computer’s functions.

This problem can have several causes, such as errors in the video drivers, failures in the connection between the monitor and the computer, or even problems with the operating system itself.

The clearest sign of this problem is the lack of image on the monitor, although it is possible that the system is working, since in some cases you could hear startup sounds or receive sound notifications.

In this article, you will learn various solutions to resolve the Windows black screen so that you can easily restore the normal functioning of your computer.

How to fix Windows black screen error

Below you will find a series of actions you can take to resolve the Windows black screen error.

-Restart your computer: A restart of your computer might help resolve the black screen issue.

In this case, you should perform a forced restart by holding down the power button with your finger until you realize that the device has completely shut down. After that, turn it back on and check if it worked.

-Connect the monitor to another port: If your computer has multiple video ports (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA), you can try connecting the monitor to a different port.

Check that it is correctly positioned and then confirm if the black screen has stopped appearing. It is also advisable to verify that the monitor brightness is not too low and that the monitor is turned on.

Additionally, you can connect your computer to another monitor or TV to determine if the problem is actually with the current monitor and not something else.

-Start in Safe Mode: In order to perform this procedure you have to restart your computer and repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) before the Windows logo appears and in this way you will be able to access Safe Mode.

Starting in this mode can help you troubleshoot issues related to video drivers and possibly stop giving you the black screen problem.

-Update or reinstall video drivers: This step is related to the previous one, since being in Safe Mode you have to go to the Device Manager until you manage to find the display adapter.

Once you find it, proceed to update or reinstall the video drivers.

-Restore the user interface: To perform this restoration you have to look for the Run function in your computer’s taskbar.

When the dialog box opens, type explorer.exe in that box and then click OK. This will restart the Explorer process and restore the Windows user interface.

-Make a registry modification: You can perform this step if the previous one does not work for you. Just open the Registry Editor tool.

When you open the application you must navigate to this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

Next, click where it says Shell and then type explorer.exe in the text box.

Then click OK and the problem should be resolved.

-Reinstall Windows: If the above actions did not work for you, then you should consider reinstalling the Windows operating system.

However, before doing so, make sure to create a backup of your important files because reinstalling will delete all data on your hard drive.
