Contenders continue to arrive for the calls “Streaming Wars”the fight for subscribers (and for audience, which do not always go hand in hand) between the different platforms for the distribution of audiovisual content over the Internet.
Paramount and Universal together have more than 10,000 hours of content in movies and series
The list of streaming platforms available in Spain is getting longer and longer: Acorn TV, Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV+, Atresplayer Premium, Barça TV, Crunchyroll, DAZN, Discovery +, Disney+, Eurosports, Filmin, FlixOlé, Footers, FuboTV, Hayu, HBO Max, iQuiyi, Movistar+, Mitele Plus, Mubi, Netflix, Planet Horror, RakutenTV, Realmadrid TV, RTVE play, Spamflix, Somos Cine TV, Starzplay… but it is continuously growing, especially with the incorporation of new platforms which arise, as in this case, from the merger of two historic cinema companies with a long tradition of television products.
Universal Studios’ planet Earth allies with Paramount Studios’ mountain peak and, together with two other television brands, Sky and Showtime, they are coming together in Spain under the name of SkyShowtime. And although for the moment the date on which this new streaming platform will start operating in Spain has not been specified, the first quarter of 2023 has been targeted.
In other European countries, such as Italy, the landing of this platform is imminent, as soon as September 15, although in that territory it will do so under the name Paramount+. A few days later, under the name SkyShowtime, it will be available in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Before the end of the year, it will start operations in the Netherlands and will be available in the United Kingdomt the beginning of 2023, it will be available in Spain along with Andorra and several Eastern European countries.
As for the price of the subscription has not yet been specified but it is known that in Finland it will be priced at 6.99 euros, which gives an approximate idea of the price in other European countries where it can be contracted.
With regard to the combined offer of Paramount and Universal’s film and series collections, this represents more than 10,000 hours of content, and in relation to distribution windows (the time that passes from a film’s theatrical release to its presence in the DVD/BluRay rental or purchase market or its arrival on streaming platforms or television networks), periods of just 30/45 days between theatrical release and streaming release are valued.
