It is a very peculiar event, recorded very rarely. It happened in front of dozens of passers-by and pedestrians in Yasuj, a city in Boyer-Ahmad province. It looks like something out of a science fiction movie. But the fish rain that hit Iran is real and it happened on Friday, May 3.

Waterspout

Last weekend, a ‘rain’ of fish surprised dozens of Iranians. They were totally stunned by the peculiar event. The video was shared by one of the witnesses. You can see how medium-sized fish fall on a street busy with vehicles.

Meteorological experts say the unusual ‘rain’ of fish could have happened due to a waterspout that originated in the Persian Gulf. This transported the fish that were in the sea. The strong gusts of wind kept them in the clouds for several minutes until they ended up being thrown over the town of Yasuj.

Other countries

A waterspout is a phenomenon very similar to a tornado. Only this happens above the water and forms a funnel that contains an intense vortex. The fish rain that hit Iran is a rare phenomenon, but it has already happened in different parts of the world. In Honduras, for example, this phenomenon was seen in the city of Yoro. There, every few years you can see fish, the size of sardines, falling from the sky. It happens due to the storms that occur during the months of May and June.

Another country where this type of events has also been seen is Spain. During 2007, an unusual ‘rain’ was recorded in Rebolledo, Alicante. In this case, they were small frogs, and not fish. However, experts point out that the possible origins could be the same.
